How the AED calculator works
The calculator uses the criteria of Latvian Cabinet Regulation No. 481 on automated external defibrillators. The key figure is the maximum number of people present at the same time – not the number of visitors per day. It determines whether an AED is required in Latvia, how many devices you need and from which date the requirement applies.
Requirements by number of people (Latvia)
| Site | People present at the same time | Minimum number of AEDs | In force from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public place | more than 1,500 | 2 | 1 January 2026 |
| Public place | 701–1,500 | 1 | 1 January 2028 |
| Educational institution | more than 1,500 | 2 | 1 September 2025 |
| Educational institution | 701–1,500 | 1 | 1 September 2025 |
| Any public place | up to 700 | voluntary | – |
Under the regulation, educational institutions are those providing basic, general secondary and vocational secondary education programmes, including vocational sports schools and extracurricular education institutions. Read more in our article AED requirements in Latvia from 2026.
Frequently asked questions
How do I determine the maximum number of people present at the same time?
Look at the peak moment – how many people can be on site at once, for example during an event or busy shopping hours. If your building has a set maximum occupancy, that is a good reference point.
Is an AED mandatory at a smaller site?
No. Where up to 700 people are present at the same time, an AED is installed voluntarily. If you do install one in Latvia, the same requirements apply – signs, a first-aid kit, regular checks and notification to the State Agency of Medicines.
Is the minimum number of AEDs enough?
Not always. It must be possible to bring the AED to the casualty within 5 minutes of the incident. A large area or several buildings may need more devices. We offer placement advice and help you find the best locations.
Who checks compliance?
In Latvia, compliance is checked by the Health Inspectorate. The installation and monitoring tasks, the notification to ZVA and the training of the responsible person can be fully or partly delegated to another company or person.
Can I rent a defibrillator?
Yes. For events, temporary sites or a trial before purchase we offer defibrillator rental – from 1 month.
