AED maintenance – pads and battery

An AED runs its own self-tests, but expiry dates and the physical condition of the device have to be monitored by a person. In Latvia, Cabinet Regulation No. 481 requires a check once a quarter.

Quarterly checklist

  • The status indicator shows “ready” (green/OK)
  • The pads have not expired and the packaging is undamaged
  • The battery expiry date and status are in order
  • The AED is in its place, the signs are visible and access is clear
  • The first-aid kit is complete
  • The check is recorded in the log

Typical lifetimes

Model Pads Battery
CU Medical iPAD SP1 ~2 years 5–6 years
Primedic HeartSave Y/YA up to 5 years up to 5 years

After every use the pads must be replaced – even if no shock was delivered.
